How Split Rent Payments works

From the first field on the form to the deposit in your account takes about a day for most applicants. Here is each step in detail, what happens behind it, and what to do once the money arrives.

Step 1: submit one request

The form on the apply page takes about three minutes. It asks for your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number for identity verification; your employment, income, and pay frequency so lenders can compare the payment to what you earn; your checking account and routing numbers for deposit and repayment; and the amount you need, from $500 to $5,000. Nothing on the form asks for a payment, and no lender in the network charges a fee before funding.

Request the amount that solves the problem. A renter short $900 should request $900, or slightly more to absorb any origination fee. Smaller requests reach more lenders and receive better rates, as the rates page explains.

Step 2: get matched with lenders

When you submit, the request is routed to lenders in our network that are licensed in your state and whose stated criteria fit your profile. Each lender reviews it independently, in most cases with a soft credit inquiry that does not affect your score, and responds within minutes during business hours. You may see one offer or several. Lenders may also ask for a document, usually a pay stub, bank statement, or ID, which you can upload from your phone.

If no lender makes an offer, the most common causes are income too low for the requested payment, a checking account with recent overdrafts, or an open bankruptcy. The eligibility guide explains each and what changes the outcome, and requesting a smaller amount often does.

Step 3: review and accept an offer

An offer shows the loan amount, APR, term, monthly payment, total repayment, and any fees, and links to the lender's own site where you review the full agreement and e-sign. Compare offers by total repayment when the monthly payments are similar, and by monthly payment when your budget is the constraint. Check for an origination fee, which is deducted from the deposit, and confirm there is no prepayment penalty; nearly every lender in the network has none. The personal loan calculator turns any offer into a total in seconds.

You are never obligated to accept. If you do not sign, no loan exists.

Step 4: receive funds and set up repayment

After you e-sign, funds are typically deposited to your checking account the next business day, provided you signed before the lender's daily cutoff. The first payment is due about a month later, often on a date you can choose. Enroll in automatic payments; most lenders reduce the APR slightly for it, and it removes the risk of a missed date.

If you share rent, this is the moment to split the loan. Use the same shares you use for rent, write down each person's amount and a collection date at least three days before the automatic draft, and keep a running record. The personal loans page explains the methods and the roommate split guide provides the agreement.

What happens behind the scenes

Split Rent Payments is paid by lenders when a request we refer results in a funded loan or a qualified lead. That payment does not change the APR you are offered; lenders price on your profile and their own cost of funds. We do not see your credit report, and we do not make or influence the credit decision. The advertiser and lending disclosure covers the arrangement in full.

If rent is due on the 1st, applying by the 27th or 28th gives a comfortable margin. Weekends and bank holidays add a day.
